Egg Sandwich with cheese and bacon

Sunset Grill, around since 1957, is known for inspiring the famous Don Henley song “Sunset Grill”.

Of course, that was the Sunset Grill that burned down in the ’90′s. This place is now just a casual, nondescript cafĂ©, almost like the kind of place that you’d find in a hostel lobby. Candy bars, condoms and oh, we’ll make you a ham and cheese sandwich if you’d like?

When I first moved to LA all those years ago, I’d often drive here (even though I could easily have walked) and order the egg sandwich for breakfast. It reminded me of an egg sandwich you’d get in 1957.

They don’t really advertise the cheese and bacon because they don’t have to; those things automatically come with it. Back when everyone ate meat and dairy cuz, well, why not?

Sunset Grill also adds lettuce and tomato alongside the egg, which I would never do at home but I love how it all tastes when they do it.

Plus, that was the only way anyone got vegetables back in 1957. I believe “salad” was invented the following year. When someone’s lettuce and tomato accidentally slipped out of their sandwich and onto their plate. “Oops! Wait a second…”

Sunset Grill also does an amazing burger. And I mean this in the backyard BBQ sense. Nothing fancy here. The bun is from a Costco 100 pack, the cheese is American and the greenery is iceberg.

It’s my favorite kind of burger.

If you gave the “grill master” at SG a package of brioche buns, they probably would use them as brillo pads for the sink.

Sunset Grill will always remind me of being a fresh faced youngster, filled with LA dreams, outdated wardrobe and an overdrawn bank account. Those were the days.
